Summer is a magical season filled with sunshine, laughter, and endless opportunities for early learning. At First Fruit Daycare, we love finding creative ways to keep little ones active, curious, and growing spiritually and academically during the warmer months.

We’ve put together five fantastic, hands-on summer activities for preschoolers. These ideas perfectly blend sensory exploration, imaginative play, and skill-building to ensure your child has an unforgettable summer.

1. Splashtastic Water Play

When the temperatures rise, nothing beats water play! Water is a wonderful tool for teaching water safety early on while keeping children cool. You don’t need a massive water park or even a commercial splash pad to have a blast. Setting up a backyard sensory table or a simple splash pad hose attachment can provide hours of entertainment.

Try ice cube painting by freezing water with food colouring and washable paint, letting preschoolers glide the melting cubes across paper. For a local day trip, taking a family excursion to a nearby aquarium is a wonderful way to connect their love of water with real-life ocean animals!

2. Tactile Sensory Bins & Sand Magic

Preschoolers learn best when they can touch, scoop, and pour. Creating a dedicated space for sensory play helps develop fine motor skills and language development. You can bring the beach home by building sandcastles in a backyard sandbox, or by bringing the fun indoors with kinetic sand.

Unlike regular sand, kinetic sand holds its shape beautifully, making it perfect for imaginative play as children pretend to bake treats or build miniature fortresses. For an added challenge, hide plastic numbers in the sand to turn clean-up time into interactive math activities where they count their treasures.

3. Sidewalk Chalk & Outdoor Games

Transform your driveway into a vibrant art studio and game zone using sidewalk chalk. Chalk is excellent for strengthening fingers and wrists, preparing young minds for writing.

Beyond drawing, you can use chalk to map out classic outdoor games. Draw a colourful hopscotch grid to practice balance and number recognition, or sketch a giant grid for outdoor tic-tac-toe. If you want to keep the physical momentum going, introduce classic backyard staples like a jump rope or hula hoops. These activities are wonderful for gross motor coordination and healthy, active fun.

4. Nature Scavenger Hunts & Adventures

God’s creation is the ultimate classroom! A simple nature walk through your neighbourhood or local park can instantly turn into an exciting nature scavenger hunt. Equip your little explorer with a magnifying glass so they can inspect leaves, tree bark, and tiny insects up close.

These outdoor adventures are fantastic for building vocabulary and early literacy as children describe what they see, hear, and feel. Encourage them to collect smooth stones, fallen leaves, and twigs, which can later be brought inside for colourful summer crafts.

5. Backyard Camping & Fort Building

You don’t have to travel far to experience the magic of the great outdoors. Backyard camping is an incredible way to spark creativity. Spend the afternoon building forts using lawn chairs, blankets, and clothespins.

Once your tent or fort is secure, settle in for some cozy storytelling. No camping experience is complete without sweet treats, so wrap up the evening by making gooey s’mores together. It’s the perfect setting to practice sharing and patience, and to make lifelong family memories.
